Tiaro

Tiaro is generous to the traveller and camper.

The township of Tiaro is located approximately 260km north of Brisbane, between Gympie and Maryborough.

With two places to stay in Tiaro, you can be sure to find a place to rest.

The Memorial Park Rest Area has overnight parking for 2 nights at Inman St behind the town park, where visitors have the use of showers and toilets free of charge for two nights. Apparently hot showers are in the disabled toilets. It is a large park right in town, bordered by 2 cafes, a supermarket and a pub. There is lots of room to run the dogs here. More details are available from the Tourist Information Centre, which is located in the old railway station on Mayne Street (Bruce Highway) next to the Shire Council Offices.

The other place to stay in Tiaro is Petrie Park, is 2km north-west of town. Turn west over the railway line off the highway, then turn right and follow the signs, which will take you to the left after 200m. Camping is on the east bank of the Mary River.

There is a good quality concrete boat ramp with easy access. I don’t how well stocked the Mary River is with fish, but I do know it is a beautiful area and just being on the water would be enough for me.

The BBQ and bins are in the middle of the day visitors area with toilets up from the river end and an undercover picnic area down towards the river. It’s always nice to have somewhere to shelter out of rain when necessary.

Following the river around to the south is the camping area, nicely tucked away down from the boat ramp. It’s not a large area, but room enough so long too many larger rigs arrive. If it gets cramped, there is always the Park, where a friendly gathering is found on many an afternoon.
