Mount Surprise

O’Briens Camp at Mount Surprise is full of adventure for dogs and fossicking enthusiasts.

O’Briens Creek Campground, north-west of Mount Surprise, is huge fun for dogs. The sprawling grounds are set on the banks of a river well worth exploring.

Set within the boundaries of a cattle station, O’Briens Camp at Mount Surprise is a gem fossicker’s. Topaz favourites found here. My neighbours would leave early and always come back with a topaz worth showing off. Many regulars have been coming here for years, decades even!

The caretaker is very friendly and great at his job. The toilets are scrubbed everyday and the massive donkey for the showers is stocked with enough firewood to guarantee everyone with a hot shower.

O’Briens Camp at Mount Surprise is $7 per night, or $42 per week, this an affordable campsite to stay and explore this type of country.

Along the river, you will find elegant white birds, large peaceful cattle, broad beaches and bubbling brooks to cool off in.

There is plenty to discover around the river, including old relics from mining days gone by.

Turn north-west on O’Briens Creek Road (opposite the police station) and follow it for about 30km. The road can be a bit rough in places, but drive slowly and any vehicle should be able to make it there.
