Mount Molloy Campgrounds at River Creek Rest Area

Mount Molloy

Rifle Creek Rest Area at Mount Molloy is hugely popular and large in size.

Rifle Creek Rest Area at Mount Molloy is extremely popular with locals and travellers alike. It straddles Rifle Creek one kilometre north of the town, being 33 km south of Mossman or 41 km north of Mareeba.

At Mount Molloy the area is huge, but it does fill up pretty quickly, so arrive in time to find the spot that is just right for you and your needs.

The facilities are great at Mount Molloy and there is even a shower, even though it is a cold one. A donation is requested to help with the upkeep. There is a dump point here if needed.

The pub in town offers hot showers for a small fee. While you’re there stock up if you need to, for those heading north or west, as the choices are slim once you leave.

It can get quite cold here, so be prepared to rug up. A fire ran quite close to the rest area while I was there. Those of us camped near the edges had to move closer to the middle just in case. This is something to be aware of in the fire season.

Sooty grunter and red claw crayfish can be caught in the creek near the rest area. You can walk down under the bridge or try to find your way along the bank to a fishing spot.

As always it is a good idea to keep an eye on the dogs, not to letting them chase the wildlife. Some special little mammals live around here.

Apparently Mount Molloy is good for bird watching. Try along the edges of the bush and over a track in the SW corner of the camping area, which leads down to the creek.Over the main road, on the eastern side of the camping area is Wetherby Rd. Follow this for about 4 km to a lagoon. Let us know how you go!
