Mitchell is a friendly town with good choices for spending time here.
Mitchell is a friendly town with two very good spots to stay, both with 2-day limits. The pub has famous counter lunches. There is a good 4wd shop for accessories etc. The local thermal pool is worth the few dollars just to sit in the hot water and relax. The town upkeeps the camping area for us travellers, so it is always a good idea to stock up in town, including fuel and repairs as required. There may be a van park in Mitchell with a good deal, which makes lingering longer easier. It’s worth checking out if you could do with some van park time. It was dog-friendly at the time of writing.
A walk along the footpaths in Mitchell is worthwhile to admire the mosaics. The library has art on display as well.
Fisherman’s Rest:
Turn north off the Warrego Highway 5 km west of town to find Fisherman’s Rest camp area. Slow down, as it is easy to pass the sign. The camp area is tucked away well off the road along the river amongst the gum trees. It’s a very peaceful place in a natural setting. The access road may get slippery in wet weather.
The toilets are basic and could be a bit of a walk if you camp down river a bit.
I have heard tales of catching Yellowbelly off the riverbank.
It may be worth bringing in firewood.
Neil Turner Weir:
Between Fisherman’s Rest and the town is a turn off to the north for the Neil Turner Weir Rest Area. It is a well-established area with great facilities. The toilets are good and the Barbecues are awesome. A grassy park area lines the river on a high bank, so if it rains heavily, campers should be safe here.
It can fill up by the afternoon, as Mitchell is popular and this an easy place to set up for the night.
