Carmila – beach camping favourite.
I never drive past Carmila. It is one of my favourites.
I have been camping at Carmila Beach since 2001, when I had blown a tyre in my converted bus and had to wait for a new one to be trucked in. Situated 84 kilometres south of Mackay, it was a gift, as I didn’t know such a beautiful beach was only 6 kilometres away or about camping at the beach. Navigating the sandy tracks and low branches in the highway coach I had in those days was tricky, but once set up, I settled in nicely.
Over the years, little has changed at Carmila, although the 3-day limit is a bit of shame. Camping at this beach has become so popular and it is such an easy place to stay, I can understand why the limit has been set.
Many of my favourite memories are born here. I had my first fire with a hollow log by the beach and am pleased that fires are still allowed. Sunrise occurs everywhere, yet here it seems to be something special and not to be missed. At low tide, you can walk out to the sandbar and look back at the beach. Make sure you can get back in when the tide turns!
The fishing at Carmila is good with a long beach to share with other hopefuls. At the southern end is a creek area, which should also be pretty good fishing.
The town of Carmila is on the Bruce Highway, making it a popular place to take a break. The service station is often offering fuel at a competitive price. The pub has been a great place over the years to have a late dinner after a long day on the road. More than once I have phoned ahead to let them know I am coming late and they happily have a meal ready.
