Dirt roads through the scrub lead to the Bogie River.
The Bogie River is good for dog travel. The river runs about 36km west of the Bruce Highway between Ayr and Bowen, paralleling the highway. The turn off to the west is just south of Gumlu.
This is cattle country and it is wise to be prepared for dirt roads and little assistance if anything goes wrong. If you do enter a cattle station, try to get permission from the manager. If you can’t make contact follow the rules of decency, eg take your rubbish out, keep your dogs under control and don’t start raging fires.
There are various spots along the Bogie River to camp, keeping in mind it is cattle country, so be aware of obvious cattle tracks and river crossings.
If you continue to the Collinsville Road, turn right towards Collinsville. A turn off to Strathmore is just before Collinsville. This road takes you down to the Bowen River, a beautiful area. The Bowen River Hotel is here. It’s worth asking around for camping in the area. I know of at least one amazing place Bogie River that was very hard to leave. If the station owner is happy for me to do so, I will publish the details. For now, happy hunting!
