Camping near Atherton is easy at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park.
There is a dog-friendly camping area 12 km north of Atherton at the Rocky Creek War Memorial Park rest area. Just before Tolga on the Kennedy Highway, and 23km south of Mareeba. There is a huge space off the highway, allowing for large rigs and enough distance from the road to be reasonably quiet.
The Toilets are good with wheelchair access. The rest area near Atherton request for donations for the upkeep is made via an honesty box. A 3-day stay limit applies. For the day visitor area, BBQs are supplied and lots of shade is available.
Rubbish bins and water are supplied.
There is enough bush close by to take the dogs for a stroll and a sniff about.
During World War 2, the Tableland area became the largest military base in Australia. Rocky Creek near Atherton, was the site of the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere. It had a 3000 bed hospital, with a capacity of 5,000 beds when needed. Which treated over 60,000 patients from 1942 to 1945
There are 100 or more military unit plaques represented here. Each has an association with the Rocky Creek Australian Army Hospital and Medical Base 1942 – 46.
Most buildings were dismantled after the war, except for some of the “igloo” hangars such as the one near Rocky Creek, which hosted entertainers such as Bob Hope.
